Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 13, 1870

Overview

A restless night with palpitations is transformed into household humor through Cosima’s mistaken cry for Richard as “Obag.” A beautiful March day restores cheer as the family visits the dairy, sees starlings gathering, and notices the first daisies. Goethe’s Faust and Beethoven’s “Es muss sein” quartet give the evening an expansive intellectual and musical happiness.

Sunday, March 13:

Restless night with palpitations, I called out five or six times, “Obag, Obag, help me,” meaning Richard. We joke a lot about this “Obag.” Lovely March day, after lunch we go with the children to the dairy. All in fine, cheerful spirits. Returning home, we see two trees full of starlings, a whole flock of them has now arrived. They commune with one another, distribute themselves among the trees, a huge twittering surrounds the whole house, on the roadside saw the first daisies. Much with R. again about Goethe’s Faust, the second part of which he describes as a complete palingenesis. In the evening the quartet “Es muss sein” with R. Much, much pleasure from it.
