Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 12, 1881

Overview

After a restless and uncomfortable night, Wagner manages some work before an afternoon walk restores a measure of calm. The evening centers on reading Heinrich von Stein's article aloud, which the couple admires greatly, prompting a pointed contrast with Nietzsche's very different character. Wagner is visibly unsettled yet amused at being compared to Shakespeare, quoting his favorite self-deprecating anecdote to deflect the weight of such praise.

Saturday, February 12:

R. had a very restless night, and all morning he feels uncomfortable, but he does some work, and after lunch we go for a walk in the palace gardens, pleased that it is again dry and cold. In the evening we read Stein's article and find it very good; his character gladdens us, and by contrast we think of Nietzsche's. R. observes that Stein's and Wolz.'s more distinguished birth had been an advantage to them. R. is on edge, but not unwell. At lunch he read to us an article in the little Oberfrankische Zeitung about longevity. After the reading of Stein's article R. said it made him feel very peculiar to hear himself mentioned in such terms, compared with Shakespeare, and he again laughingly quotes his favorite story: "J'aime votre rude franchise" ["I like your brutal frankness"].
