Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 21, 1880

Overview

R. was in good spirits after a sound night, and we laughed at his joking confusion over what he was. He worked, grumbled about the cardinal virtues, enjoyed the Palazzo Loredano more than the Modena, and later our talk turned to the Cologne Cathedral festivities and Herr Oppenheim.

Thursday, October 21:

R. had a good night, and at breakfast we have to laugh heartily when he says to me, "I am very... run down; for a moment I did not know what I was."

He works and wants to know from me what the cardinal virtues are, is annoyed about them. We take a trip together to the Palazzo Loredano, which he likes very much, and then to the Modena, he believing me to be very fond of it, but he has no desire to have it.

In the evening we chat, and our conversation touches on the Cologne Cathedral festivities, in which Herr Oppenheim played a major role.
