Saturday, October 2:
R. slept well, and if it had not been for the failure of another surprise he had prepared for us in the Pitti Gallery, this day would also have been a wonderful one. Toward evening he goes out with me, searches for a dress which caught his attention, finds it, and orders it for me; he then invites me to go to the Ciompi (beerhouse) with him, is pleased that I do so, and we then return home beneath a blazing sunset, to receive in the evening the news that we can now be accommodated tomorrow evening in Venice after all, which had at first seemed unlikely.
Since R. insists on having a saloon carriage, he sets out with Lusch and is told at the station that we cannot have it until Monday, so we stay on in Florence.
