Thursday, September 30:
R. had a good rest but is in poor spirits, and a suggestion I make to him, to allow Siegfried to see Ravenna with Jouk., unfortunately irritates him greatly. He then observes that everything is making him melancholy, all his thoughts, the fact that he is not feeling well, the view from our rooms, and the remoteness of the town, indeed even the town itself, which has little to offer him; all this depresses him. He longs for Venice, and we pack and settle the inventory in haste.
(Yesterday he talked a lot about the false Demetrius, saying the Russians did not consider him genuine because he sprang agilely onto his horse, whereas "genuine" people always allowed themselves to be led.)
