Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 21, 1880

Overview

Sun and inspiration lifted R.'s mood, and he eagerly noted a new musical idea for the third act of Parsifal before becoming deeply moved by Luther's catechism. A vineyard walk ended in fatigue after he strayed onto rougher ground, and the day closed with her father's Beethoven playing and renewed talk from R. about the impossibility of teaching such music properly.

Tuesday, September 21:

R. slept well, tells me it is a lovely day, and he is pleased not only by the sun, but by an inspiration for the 3rd act of Parsifal, the prolonging of the clarinet after the violin; he writes it down and is very cheerful.

Before lunch he sees the Smaller Catechism among Eva's books and is so affected by the foreword that after lunch he reads it to my father and me and exclaims, "Luther was the greatest patriot of all!" In the afternoon we go for a walk through the vineyards; unfortunately his inclinations entice him away from the wide paths, and that results in fatigue in spite of the most splendid sunset.

In the evening my father delights us with his playing of two Beethoven sonatas (Quasi Fantasia and D Major), which leads R. back to the crazy idea of a "school"; who could ever learn to play these works that way?
