Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 13, 1880

Overview

R. looked unwell after the troubled night, but he and Cosima quietly repaired the misunderstanding over her remarks to Lulu. Visitors drew him into cheerful company despite his worn appearance, he joked about decorating the cabinet with the German consul general, and the day ended calmly with a visit to Joukowsky’s new apartment and the peaceful Sunday atmosphere of Posillipo.

Sunday, June 13:

R. looks quite indisposed. He heard the sound, too, and thought it was an unusually powerful female voice; we heard it during the night. Perhaps from the English ship the children visited and on which they today attend divine service. R. is pleased that they have inherited such a facility for languages.

Toward noon I explain to R. that my exhortation to Lusch was not meant in an offensive way, and today he listens to me and my explanation. Fear of the demon who makes sport of us poor mortals! Some callers arrive; R. receives them with me and is cheerful, though he looks run down. When we show off the cabinet and one of the visitors says that portraits (medallions) should be affixed to it, R. says, “Yes, of the German consul general in Naples!”

Afterward we visit friend Joukowsky in his new apartment. Pleasure in the Sunday Posilipo. Quiet evening.
