Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 1, 1880

Overview

Though not fully well after a restless night, R. immersed himself in his major work and promised astonishing results. The day mixed formalities and feeling: letters of thanks, sittings with a photographer and painter, deep emotion at seeing R. and Fidi photographed together, and fresh delight in Joukowsky's Parsifal sketch despite needed revisions.

Content

Tuesday, June 1:

R. is not entirely well; he had a somewhat restless night, but he settles down to his big work and says we will be amazed by what he is producing. I write letters of thanks on his behalf for the 22nd, and read with Herr v. Stein his piece on G. Bruno.

Photographer and painter in the afternoon, and R. poses good-humoredly. Uncontrollable emotion as I see R. and Fidi sitting side by side while their picture is taken. In the evening friend Joukowsky brings his sketch for the 2nd act of Parsifal. Several things have to be altered, but occupation with it is in itself a pure delight, as is also the zeal of our friend.

Lovely views; R. observes that Vesuvius and Capri are like man and wife, sun and moon.
