Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 14, 1880

Overview

R. began the day with an early walk and a cheerful exchange of whistles with Siegfried, then worked with the diarist on the biography while laughing over the falsehoods of Bissing's story. He was playful at home, pained by a doctor's remark, and later unsettled by Rubinstein's visit and his concern over R.'s bleak outlook.

R. slept well, gets up early, and walks to the palm tree drinking Aqua di Leone. In the vineyards he meets Siegfried with the gardener, and they whistle to each other: “How nice it is, previously it was a parrot who answered me, now it is a son!”

Today we work together on the biography; much Bissing nonsense, which makes us laugh a lot, in spite of its sad side, all this lying and deception! Much laughter about this.

R. on a walk with the children, I to meet them after paying a call on the Liechtensteins. R. enchanted by the hill above our garden.

In the evening friend Rubinstein, straight from Bayreuth. Somewhat perturbed by R.’s hopelessness! “He wants to become a saint, like the Stromkarl,” says R.
