Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 6, 1880

Overview

R. had only a tolerable night but worked well on the biography, while a complaint about fashion prices led him to mock Nietzsche as someone drawn to French frivolity. Later, an autograph catalogue and Hölderlin’s letter to Schiller captivated both of them, though wind kept R. indoors and the day ended with guests.

R. had a tolerable night, and we work nicely on the biography. I told R. about a visit I paid to a milliner and the ridiculously exaggerated prices now demanded for articles of clothing, and the impossibility of wearing them for long. R. is reminded in this connection of Nietzsche, who for him represents French fashions: “Just to liberate himself from me, he succumbs to all available platitudes!”

In the evening a catalogue of an autograph collection, containing Hölderlin’s letter to Schiller; remembering that Hölderlin was N.’s favorite poet, I read the letter and tell R. about it; he finds it so striking that he asks me to keep it. R. attempts to go out of doors, but the wind prevents it. In the evening the Liechtensteins and Pepino.
