Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 31, 1880

Overview

Though the night was not bad, R. stayed gloomy and physically weak, finishing his letter to the King in the afternoon. He found some comfort in Schopenhauer and had the diarist read him passages on Augustine, while they kept to whist in order to avoid heavy conversation.

Wednesday, March 31:

R. did not have a bad night, but he is still not well and is in very gloomy spirits. In the afternoon he finishes his letter to the King. He tells me what else he has written in it.

Otherwise, he finds pleasure in Schopenhauer, and he reads to me what he has to say about Augustine and “the poor fellow from nowhere.” We play whist again, in order to avoid conversation and thoughts.
