Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 4, 1880

Overview

With his eye better and the weather fine, R. read Renan and welcomed an interpretation of John that matched his own sense of Gfrorer. He also enjoyed the terrace and spent the evening comparing Greek history favorably with Roman history, dismissing the Romans as unimpressive.

Wednesday, February 4:

R. had a good night, and his eye is showing a marked improvement. He reads Renan’s Églises and is pleased to find in it an interpretation of the Gospel According to Saint John which agrees with Gfrörer’s. Fine weather, R. goes for a little walk on the terrace and delights in our splendid surroundings.

In the evening much talk about Greek history; R. always maintains that in comparison with it the Romans do not impress him at all.
