Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 1, 1880

Overview

After a tolerable night, R. spent much of the day elaborating a plan to move to America, especially Minnesota, where he imagined founding a drama school and house. His eye inflammation worsened, but he kept returning to the idea of the United States as the only place that still felt expansive and hopeful to him.

Sunday, February 1:

After a tolerable night he wants to move to America, Minnesota, and there, for a subscription of one million dollars, build a drama school and a house. He would dedicate Parsifal to them and stage it there, for he can no longer tolerate the situation here in Germany. It is years since I have seen him as he was yesterday. Today the eye inflammation is worse, and it is tormenting him.

Again and again he keeps coming back to America, says it is the only place on the whole map which he can gaze upon with any pleasure: “What the Greeks were among the peoples of this earth, this continent is among its countries.” He works out his whole plan while we are sitting in the room darkened for the sake of his eyes.

I read to him some things in the I. Z., including a description of the people of Chile and Peru which, because of his great sympathy for the Chileans, he finds very interesting.
