Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 10, 1879

Overview

R. woke in good spirits and greeted the diarist with a teasing comparison to Titania and Bottom. The conversation turned again to his articles and to civilization, race, and empire, before ending in a joking wish for the company of Cetewayo.

Wednesday, December 10:

R. woke up cheerful, and when I greet him affectionately, he says we are just like Titania and Bottom, but I should on no account look at him. Various thoughts I had garnered from him lead him to the subject of his future articles, and he says he would really prefer not to say a single word more. He also knows nobody, he says, to whom he can say these things. I read Herr v. Weber’s book to him, and it occurs to him how impossible it is for us to civilize these peoples (Kaffirs, Zulus, etc.). What clothes would we give them? The Romans, he says, had some claim to regard themselves as civilizers. Then he says with a laugh that he would like Cetewayo for company.
