Tuesday, December 2:
R. feels run down after yesterday, though he had no bad dreams during the night and did not get up; talking is a strain on him.
Sitting at my writing desk, I am suddenly startled out of my wits by a very loud bang. The cold winter seems insupportable to me! R. does not go out of doors. His spirits gradually improve, and he talks humorously about our friends. In the evening, so that he will not be overtired, we play whist.
