Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 9, 1879

Overview

With fine weather and a good night behind him, R. worked on his article and then joined in a lively, social Sunday marked by walks, visitors, and cheerful conversation. He insisted this article would be his last, suggesting both fatigue and a finality that contrasted with the easy buoyancy of the day.

Content

Sunday, November 9:

R. had a good night, the sky shines brightly, and we decide to eat late and to go for a walk before lunch. We stroll to Birken in various groups. R. stays behind to work on his article, then walks, not to Birken, but in the direction of Konnersreuth.

At lunch he is so gay and exuberant that friend Gersdorff is swept up into joining in. Friend Stein appears at coffee time, very happy with his visit to Munich; a little later the Jägers; his guest appearance was a complete success, which is very pleasant news.

In the evening our neighbors and Rubinstein. R. maintains that this article is the last he is going to write.
