Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 1, 1879

Overview

R. sleeps well, works on his article, and delights in intellectual conversation about scientific discovery. The evening reading of Keller especially charms him, though he is not feeling perfectly well and is unimpressed by a café outing that leaves him only mildly amused.

Saturday, November 1:

R. had a good night, did not get up at all; he goes to work on his “air varié” as he calls his article. Talk at lunch about Robert Mayer, and over coffee R. asks to be told about the new law this scholar has discovered!

He goes for a short walk, and in the evening we read G. Keller’s Dietegen with infinite enjoyment. R. keeps exclaiming: “No, who would ever have thought of that? They are very first impressions, bubbling up as if out of a bottle.”

R. does not feel very well and takes some pills - my impulse, God knows, is always to advise him to take nothing at all. On the doctor’s recommendation he goes to the Café Sammet instead of to Angermann’s, and finds everything there, the beer as well as the people, very unattractive; the only thing that amuses him is a witticism in a paper - that in the morning recruits are bombarded with words of abuse and in the evening, as extras in Lohengrin, are addressed as “Ye nobles of Brabant!”
