Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 20, 1879

Overview

R. has a poor night but is cheered by the picture, which he playfully associates with ideality. The main event is the arrival of Herr von Stein, a promising young tutor for Siegfried, though his Dühring sympathies and anti-Christian views introduce a note of caution.

Monday, October 20:

Bad night for R.; however, he takes pleasure in my picture and says it calls to him, “Richel, Richel, ideality.” The event of the day is the arrival of Herr von Stein, a young, fair-haired, fine-looking man, a true German, very serious, but at the same time friendly. He is indeed willing to undertake Siegfried’s education! We still cannot quite believe it; and in the evening friend Wolzogen as well - “a black one and a white one!”

The only thing that alarms us is the discovery that our new friend is a supporter of Dühring! Also an opponent of Christianity - but it all emerges from him in an unaffected and indeed noble manner.
