Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 18, 1879

Overview

A restful night leads to a decision not to rehearse, and lunch conversation turns serious with talk of Jews and the appalling infant mortality in Bavaria. The evening brings the first act of Götterdämmerung, followed by an unenthusiastic response to a Beethoven quartet that R. dismisses as mere note-spinning.

Content

Saturday, October 18:

R. had a good night, but he prefers not to hold a rehearsal in the morning. Lunch with the conductor, conversation about the Jews, and the conductor also tells us of the horrifying infant mortality in Bavaria. Many sad accounts.

In the evening the first act of Götterdämmerung. When after supper a Beethoven quartet is played (Op. 59), it gives us no pleasure at all; it seems to me that if one has been listening to dramatic music, the other kind makes no real impact - also this particular quartet strikes me as rather academic. R. calls such music note-spinning.
