Saturday, September 20:
R. had a good night; in the morning the children were mentioned once again, their individuality, the joy and hope they bring to us. R. then settles down to his letter to Herr von Weber.
In the evening we again take up the introduction to Philo of Alexandria. The comparison between the Protestant and Catholic churches in it seems to us very good. R. says, “I do not believe in God, but in godliness, which is revealed in a Jesus without sin.”
Over coffee we talked of the possibility of my father’s having come into contact with R. in his youth, whether he would have influenced him, or vice versa; R. says: “I was persuasive, I know. I turned people’s heads and then I ran away from them — it has been like that all through my life.” Memories of Friederike Meyer, the poor, good creature!
