Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 10, 1879

Overview

Bad weather darkens the mood, yet R. resolves to begin his score and spends time reading hostile or off-putting texts from religious and literary history. In the afternoon and evening, the singers’ procession and a visit from musical guests provide spectacle, humor, and finally a Bach prelude and fugue to close the day.

Content

Sunday, August 10:

R. had a good night; the overcast skies and cold, wet weather do have an oppressive effect on him, but he is firmly resolved to start on his score. He reads a book about the Old Testament and then, for fun, V. Hugo’s Lucrèce Borgia, which disgusts him.

In the afternoon the singers’ procession, with virgins clad in white and much noise; R., the children, and I cannot help laughing heartily, for there is much absurdity to be seen. In the evening a visit from Herr Löffler (Kundry) and a Dr. Kienzl from Graz, conversation about many things, which R. brings to an end by having a Bach prelude and fugue played.
