Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 14, 1870

Overview

Health improves enough for Cosima to go into town, make purchases, and visit Countess Bassenheim. Lusch’s dream about her father reassures Cosima that she is preserving the child’s attachment to him. Richard gives her the first penciled pages of Götterdämmerung, making the day feel ceremonially important, even as he shields her from further conflict with his sister.

Friday, January 14:

Better again, R. too; he works, I go into town, make purchases, and visit Countess Bassenheim. Lusch tells me that she dreamed of her father and felt such joy at his arrival that she almost fell out of the window. I feel glad that I am succeeding in keeping her feelings for her father alive.

R. works and, when I return home, gives me the first penciled pages of Götterdämmerung, with which I consecrate the little bureau in the corner. In the afternoon played with the children, read them fairy tales.

In the evening R. writes to his sister Cäcilie, to my relief making no mention of the business between her and myself; but he forbids me to write a single word to her, he says she is not worth it. In the evening Theaetetus. Sunshine.
