Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 14, 1879

Overview

The day is gentler, with improved health, shared memories of Zurich and their difficult past, and a quiet contentment in the garden. Carlyle’s account of an abbey keeps him absorbed in the evening, and she experiences the rare pleasure of having the day largely to herself with him.

Content

Wednesday, May 14:

R. had a restful night and is looking well; we talk about our silver wedding anniversary, which we hope to celebrate! In the afternoon we immerse ourselves in memories, Hans, the departure from Zurich, how for a long time there had to be silence between us, a deep, subconscious silence based on fear!

Departure of our Frenchman, who after all appears not to be entirely free from the limitations of his native land. R. takes him for a little walk in the palace gardens, and I then find R. sitting in the summerhouse. A lovely afternoon hour, the two dogs at our feet, and we feeling content! ...

In the evening we read Carlyle’s history of the Abbey of St. Edmundsbury; very gripping. R. very taken with King Henry II (in his judgment on the newly elected Abbot Samson). He is also highly amused by the monks’ Latin. A pleasant and lovely day, on which I was permitted to occupy myself solely with the 22nd and be alone with him.
