Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 12, 1879

Overview

After a good night, he spends much of the day on his article and then turns inward toward religion, especially Christ’s singular innocence. Their evening becomes a deeper musical session, and the discussion closes on his view that creation itself is the most intense and satisfying phase of artistic life.

Monday, May 12:

R. had a good night; but he complains of a headache when we meet again at lunch. Overwork, perhaps? His article is keeping him very busy. He goes for a walk, I follow my little paths of preparation! Several visits have been announced for the 22nd; R. seems not unfavorably disposed, and so they are accepted.

In the evening R. talks about religion and says he has been thinking a lot today about Christ; he has come to see clearly that it is Christ’s sinlessness which distinguishes him from all others and makes him so moving in his mercy. All the other founders of religions and saints, like Buddha, for example, started as sinners and became saints, but Christ could not commit a sin.

After that, the third act of Parsifal: first from the funeral procession to the end, then from the introduction to the procession!
