Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 20, 1879

Overview

On a Sunday with better weather, family rhythms briefly settle into harmony: Fidi baths with R., the May Festival rehearsal begins, and the first fine day lifts everyone’s spirits. R. is thoughtful about temperament and emotional fire, and the evening closes with a reading of Diderot that deepens the day’s intellectual mood.

Content

Sunday, April 20:

R. had a good night. As usual on Sunday, Fidi bathed with R.; R. talks of his pleasant, unemotional nature, wondering whether he will acquire some fire. ... We hope so, and hope that hot temper is not an essential part of a fiery soul. — For me and the children, first rehearsal of the May Festival; coming home, we see R. in the garden beside the poultry yard. Delight in our first fine day! But in the afternoon the sky clouds over and the wind returns, so that we cut our walk short.

In the evening R. reads aloud the first half of Diderot’s Rameau’s Nephew.
