Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 1, 1879

Overview

A warm spring day allows time in the garden, though illness limits both spouses. The entry settles into a quiet, reflective mood, as if daily beauty and private longing are all that can be held onto while the days drift by.

Tuesday, April 1:

A warm spring day. We spend a long time in the garden; R. at work, but also out of doors a lot. In the evening, since I have a sore throat and R. must not overexert himself, we play whist with the children. During the day the Sistine Chapel.

And so the days pass by! What it is that illumines them I cannot describe, only hold the “fair and calmly contemplated wish” tight within my breast.
