Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 4, 1869

Overview

Richard's health returns after a bath, and his revived eyes restore Cosima's own sense of light. He writes, works on the score, and later comes to her deeply moved by the Nibelungen, while she fears the strain such emotion may place on him. A walk with Loldi and a fiery sunset connect the day's hope to Wagner's early letters, poetry, and the mingled symbols of sunset and star.

Content

Thursday, February 4:

R. well again; a bath helped him. His eyes gleam, and so my star is now shining again, too. In cheerful mood he writes letters and works on his score.

After lunch I took a long walk with Loldi and watched a wonderfully exuberant sunset. Aglow with fire, one mountain was holding an exalted, silent conversation with the snow-covered, whitely gleaming mountain opposite. Light and heat, sun-drenched snow summit and sun-sparkling earth mass were telling each other things I did not understand; then both gave way to the majesty of night.

In the morning I had been rereading the first letters R. wrote me, from Starnberg, and the accompanying poem about the sunset and the star. In the evening R. came up to my room, much affected by his Nibelungen work; I responded to his mood hardly at all, for I fear the effect of such excitement on his health. Dictation.
