Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 6, 1879

Overview

Wagner feels ready to move from inking old sketches to composing again, and he predicts that Parsifal's completion will make the coming year better still. The evening returns to family pleasure, Wolzogen's writing, and a frank dismissal of Kellermann as evidence of Wagner's present domestic contentment.

Content

Monday, January 6:

R. had a good night and now intends to get on with the composition - up till now he has only been inking in his penciled sketches. Cheerful breakfast! When I tell him my only wish is that this year be as good as the last, he says, “It will be even better; Parsifal will be completed, and then I won’t bother myself about anything at all.”

R. does not go out today, and we spend the evening alone together, after having had a great deal of fun with the children at supper. We go through friend Wolzogen’s “Language” and discuss once more the distasteful subject of K[ellermann]: “The fact that I have put up with this poor creature for so long shows how happy I am with you and the children.”
