Sunday, December 12:

Through all these days I was preoccupied with Daniel, who died on December 4, 1859. I am worried about his grave. Children, my children, hold firm to one another: brotherly love, sisterly love, nothing else can make up for it!

R. completes the pencil sketch of the Prelude to Götterdämmerung. The picture of Uncle A[dolph] W[agner] arrives. I for a walk with the children to meet Mariechen B[assenheim], who is eating with us.

In the evening magic lantern, then took the little girl back to her mother. After tea continued Tristram Shandy. R. does more work on his essay, with increasing vexation as he thinks of musical conditions in Germany.
