Overview

R. is overtired from a poor night but soon recovers his good humor, even as the household continues discussing larger social and cultural questions. In the evening he entertains the guests with songs, and the day closes in warm intimacy among the remaining family circle.

But then R. had a bad night, he got out of bed three times, and even in the early hours he was unable to get any real rest. He also complains that he is being plagued by melodies from Le Postillon de Lonjumeau — however, they are gay ones! He goes to his work, and despite his restless night and the bad weather, he is cheerful again at lunch, and as kind as ever. We go for a stroll in the garden in the afternoon, discussing the peculiarities of Israel, of which we have again become so clearly aware. In the evening the Feustel family, the W.’s, and Frau Jager. R. performs in his inimitable way two ballades by Loewe, “Edward” and “Die Hexen,” then, along with Frau Jager, “Wenn mir dein Auge strahlt” — always divine, whether solemn or joking. Lusch plays the piano for us and shows decided progress. After the visitors have gone, R., Malwida, and I remain together in intimate conversation.
