Monday, September 2:
R. slept well and works again today after two days’ break (in order to accompany my father he also interrupted his work on Saturday); he comes to lunch very cheerful, and when, on returning from paying some calls with Malwida, I go to greet him, I find him preoccupied, searching; I withdraw, and presently hear him improvising. The pigeons have been recaptured, R. very pleased about it. Also Fidi is looking better.
At supper R. declares how necessary it is for him to be absolutely alone when he is working, he does not want even those dearest to him near him, though he much likes to gaze, for example, at my portrait. (Resumption of my work with the children.)
