Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 16, 1878

Overview

Richard sleeps well but cannot settle into his article, while the day remains raw and unsettled. An outing to the Eremitage offers brief relief, and the evening brings letters, family concerns, and a supportive article from Frantz that is praised for its accessible yet cultivated tone.

Tuesday, July 16:

R. slept well and resolved to work on his article; at lunch he tells me that he could not get into the mood. I write letters, among others to the King’s secretary.

In the afternoon a drive with R. and the children. Raw weather, but in the Eremitage we are sheltered, and the walk gives us pleasure in spite of the sad sight of completely frostbitten trees [?], which R. points out to me; the view from one of the heights over St. Johannis and the hills is wonderful and heartily delights us.

In the evening our friends Gl. and the W.’s. Franziska made her departure today, we very much hope we shall be able to help these good people. A long letter from poor E. Hagen induces R. to write to his mother. C. Frantz has sent us a nice article on socialism, written in a popular but nonetheless cultivated style.
