Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 12, 1878

Overview

News of the attempted attack on the German emperor prompts grim speculation about social misery and desperation. Wagner feels sluggish and unwell, and the pair spend the evening reading together in a more subdued mood.

Content

Sunday, May 12:

When I take Bonichen to the photographer’s this morning, we hear that shots have been fired at the German Emperor. Discussing all the possible motives with R., I feel that penury is the only convincing one: to commit suicide rather than starve, but beforehand to get some sort of satisfaction through a mad act of revenge against the person one might regard as the symbol of our society. A horrible deed, yet the condition which brought it about more horrible still!

R. in general not very well, somewhat languid. We read Kenilworth in the evening.
