Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 21, 1869

Overview

Socrates remains the morning's subject as Richard compares his moral height with Christianity's ecstatic world-renunciation and the saint's symbolic vision. Countess Bassenheim visits, her daughter stays for lunch, and Richard completes and sends off his essay. Gorgias is read in the evening.

Sunday, November 21:

In the morning we again talk about Socrates. "Beyond this moral code Christianity could not go. Christianity generated ecstasy, the complete destruction of the world, but as regards what the world itself can bring about, no one can ever go higher than Socrates.

"In the greatness of his heart the saint sees, but he can only speak in symbols, the symbols of religion, and those who do not see the picture in the same way as he cannot understand the symbols."

Visit from Countess Bassenheim; her little girl stays to lunch with us. R. works on his essay and sends it off.

In the evening read Gorgias.
