Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 27, 1878

Overview

After a good night, Richard works while the diarist continues household and festival preparations, and the evening’s reading in Waverley is shadowed by disgust at Reichstag debates and theatrical vulgarity in Berlin. Even so, he restrains his anger over new overtures concerning the Ring and saves it for more serious provocation.

Content

Wednesday, February 27:

R. slept well and is working; I do the same with the children and preparations. R. goes out in the evening. Continued Waverley with great enjoyment.

R. tells us of a deplorable session in the Reichstag on the question of the monopoly, more dueling bouts. Letter from the wife of the Minister of the Household in Schwerin: they want only to know R.’s terms for the whole of the Ring des Nibelungen, and R. decides to hold his great rage in check and give vent to it only if Berlin ever shows a desire for the Ring.

For the wedding festivities in Berlin they have painted a backdrop with a seated audience for the entry of Titus, this consisting of the Emperor and his Court! Also a curtain showing the palaces of Burg and Meiningen, such is art in the capital of the German Reich!
