Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 21, 1878

Overview

After a better night, Richard works on the close of What Is German? and continues laughing over the phrase cult of the family. Letters, plans for the Nibelungen, and an evening devoted again to Parsifal keep the day poised between polemic and inspiration.

Thursday, February 21:

R. had a better night; he works - we are still laughing about the "cult of the family" - the "wildly despairing over turning into a family," says R.

The following sentence has been erased: "He reads to me what he wrote before his walk, the conclusion of What Is German?, the irony of which gives us much delight. See February 22."

Letter from Herr Rudolphi, again with selbstredend ["self-evident"], the favorite word nowadays! He persists in wanting to present the Nibelungen. In the evening Parsifal!
