Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 18, 1878

Overview

Richard works and walks in bright weather while family life, even Fidi’s singing of Klingsor’s motive, seems to echo his creative world. Evening reading in Lichtenberg gives the day a more reflective close, with Richard admiring him as a precursor to Schopenhauer.

Content

Monday, February 18:

R. works in the garden, Fidi sings Klingsor's motive, which pleases R. very much. Lovely sunshine. R. and I go for a walk in the palace gardens, but since it is very wet and muddy, we just walk in a circle on the green meadow beside the parade ground, thinking of the Elysian fields and of Achilles, who preferred being a laborer on earth to dwelling in bliss in the shades!

In the evening read Lichtenberg with much, much enjoyment. The aphorisms on philosophy and religion are splendid: he is a true forerunner of Schopenhauer.
