Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 1, 1878

Overview

A rare good night brightens the morning, but social obligations quickly intrude with a housewarming lunch and an evening reception that both tax Richard’s patience. Annoying letters about Walküre and the Ring provoke sharp replies from him, especially where the family’s authority or dignity is slighted.

Content

Friday, February 1:

R. had a good night, and I hear him practicing the final words of Gurnemanz. For me this is like sunshine. But today unfortunately we have a housewarming lunch with the Wolzogens, who yesterday moved into their apartment, and in the evening a reception here, our sacrificial offering for living in Bayreuth. Both disagreeable for R., though he endures them with great kindness and amiability.

Annoying letters: from the conductor Eckert, who is unwilling to take the refusal of Die Walküre seriously, and from Herr Voltz: these gentlemen want to take over Der Ring des Nibelungen, too! The conductor Abt writes to Batz: "Cosima has written to me to say..." For this "Cosima" R. gives Herr Voltz a deserved rebuke; and to Herr Eckert he writes that though his letter may have contained a joke, it was by no means meant as a joke.
