Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 29, 1878

Overview

Richard appears physically worn even as he completes the penciled sketches dated January 29 and shares more of Parsifal’s subtle, hovering development. The diarist responds with a rapturous description of the music and contrasts his inner greatness with a shallow public world busy with empty commemorations.

Tuesday, January 29:

R. had a good night, that is, he got up only once. But to my eyes he looks run down. On the penciled sketches is written “January 29, ’78” - they are finished.

R. shows me the voice which breathes the words selig im Glauben once again after Parsifal has been repulsed by Gurnemanz. I said to R. that, just like the imperceptible change and the unfelt development within Parsifal himself, this music develops, changes, hovers; one is wrapped up and borne along by it as if by magic. Light gives way to dark as in the colors of clouds at sunset, and all one feels is a constant, unchanging sense of spiritual well-being as one is borne along by it.

And what is the world doing for him? The W. Society in Berlin is having a commemoration day! In this chasm which divides him from the world I lay all my love, my poor, infinite love, filled with sacrificial longings!
