Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 26, 1878

Overview

Richard remains absorbed in his work and sings a newly completed phrase from Parsifal that exactly matches his intention, leaving the diarist shaken with joy and fear. Their happiness feels almost ecstatic, though concern over his painful foot darkens the day.

Saturday, January 26:

Work with the children, hearing the sacred sounds! R. is still preoccupied when he comes to lunch, and in the evening he sings to me “Selig in Liebe, selig im Glauben” [“Blessed in love, blessed in faith”]. “Oh, that’s beautiful!” he cries, “exactly as I wanted it.” And it is beautiful!

How can I describe these feelings which send shivers through me? How express this wish to die, this apprehension about his well-being, this blessing and trembling, this pleading and thanking? Our life is now even more blissful, ecstatic, than it was in Tribschen!

Only the knowledge that R.’s foot is giving him pain and preventing his walking much casts a shadow over my feelings, and a large one, alas! In the evening W. Scott.
