Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 14, 1878

Overview

The day is filled with letters, family concern over Fidi’s health, and one of the household’s recurring private jokes, as every mishap is now labeled Eulalia. Practical matters intrude when Feustel asks that the King approve payment of Munich royalties, while Richard turns even a walk home past two lean cows into thoughts of Pharaoh’s dream.

Content

Monday, January 14:

Letters of all kinds. R. inscribes the pages "Eulalia"! Everything that has gone awry is now called "Eulalia," after an anecdote in the Fliegende Blatter! R. says laughingly that future generations will think it refers to a secret love! Fidi not quite well, which causes us concern.

In the afternoon I have a conversation with Herr Feustel, and he requests me to ask the King to approve payment of royalties by the Munich theater. I thank friend Feustel very cordially for entrusting this to me and sparing R. at this time. R. comes to fetch me, and I return home with him. Two lean cows remind him of Pharaoh's dream, which keeps him occupied the whole way home. We converse in the evening, then two "songs from Hell."
