Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 3, 1878

Overview

Richard continues working despite feeling unwell, and the diarist worries over a strange lingering symptom. At lunch he recounts an early childhood memory of begging for music paper, while the household also hears encouraging news about the Society of Patrons and ends the evening with lighter reading because he is too tired for Dante.

Content

Thursday, January 3:

R. working! He does not feel entirely well, has a curious taste of sour milk in his mouth which will not go away; I hope it is nothing, but I am worried. At lunch he tells us how he asked his mother for money to buy his first music paper, in order to copy out “Tittow’s Wilde Jagd.” She gave him the money grudgingly at first, but was then quite moved when she saw his first notes!

The news coming to Herr von Wolzogen from all quarters concerning the organization of the Society of Patrons sounds quite good. I spend the morning arranging the library. In the evening the history of the Arabs once more, since R. feels too worn out to read the Divina commedia.
