Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 31, 1877

Overview

Lunch was delayed so R. could finish a piece of work in ink before the day moved on. The evening felt festive and reflective, with New Year’s customs, tree lighting, and music shaping a sense of joy. Despite the hardships of the year, the writer closes it with deep gratitude and inward peace.

Content

Monday, December 31:

R. orders lunch an hour later so that he can work something out in ink.

A merry New Year’s Eve, telling fortunes with molten lead and lighting the tree, Divina commedia and the strains of Parsifal. How inwardly content and inwardly inspired are we as we come to the end of this so difficult year! “Now thank we all our God” oh, how I thank him!
