Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 13, 1877

Overview

His dissatisfaction with the morning's work cast a shadow over the day, and even administrative news about local societies did little to improve it. In the evening, however, a strong essay on Kleist restored some intellectual excitement, and hearing passages from Die Meistersinger was a clear pleasure.

Content

Thursday, December 13:

R. is dissatisfied with his morning’s work and intends to discard it. Ill humor is the consequence. Dr. Riser’s reply to Herr von W.’s invitation to merge the local Societies into the general Patrons’ Society is also not calculated to raise our spirits.

In the evening Herr v. W. reads us an excellent article he has written about Heinrich Kleist, in which he indicates quite outstandingly the peculiar nature of the poet’s genius and the special qualities of both Die Hermannsschlacht and Der Prinz von Homburg. After that R. plays us some passages from Die Meistersinger - splendid work!
