Diary Entry of December 4, 1877

Overview

He works but is irritated by the difficulties of managing school and a periodical, both of which threaten to pull him into public obligations he dislikes. The couple laugh about the absurdity of the situation even as they worry about how to protect his creative concentration.

Tuesday, December 4:

R. had a tolerable night and he works. But school and periodical (“Schule und Schournal,” as he jokingly alliterates it) are causing him difficulties; he would most prefer not to start anything new outside, and the enrollments are so few that it seems almost absurd not to turn down the half-dozen people concerned. However, the presence here of H. v. Wolzogen, who is otherwise of much value to us, obliges R. to find some activity for him. And so the periodical! The idea of addressing any more words to the public is distasteful to R., and my only desire is that he have tranquillity in order to create. A curious situation. In the evening R. and I laugh heartily about it, in spite of the worry it causes us.
