Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 10, 1877

Overview

Business matters around several compositions continue, but the household is shaken by the sudden loss of a nephew, which leaves him unable to work for part of the day. By evening, a string quartet gathering and Haydn lift the mood, and the day ends with talk of music, professional musicians, and rumors from court.

Saturday, November 10:

Herr Peters is inquiring about the Idyll, the Sonata in A-flat Major, and the Overture in C Major. Herr Strecker has not yet replied. R. talks about his attitude toward the world and how utterly isolated he feels in it, having been so forsaken in connection with his undertaking and now so ignored with regard to his school. He has me and the children, he says, but otherwise nothing.

Terrible news of the sudden death of our nephew Clemens. R. is incapable of work because of it. In the afternoon he and his lawyer formulated for Herr Simson in Berlin his terms for the Court theaters. In the evening the quartet, Opus 135, again, with tempo indications by R., and in B-flat major; at the end, the wonderful Adagio from Haydn's Quartet, Opus [left blank], R.'s great favorite. The lovely evening gives R. much delight: “What I like best is being with professional musicians, they know how to do things.” All kinds of strange rumors about Councilor DufHipp's resignation; it is said the Linderhof castle is to be rented out.
