Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 8, 1877

Overview

The day was consumed by orthopedic treatment and school-related worries, and R. was not in a working mood at first. He began a printer’s copy of Parsifal, shared a lively new symphonic idea, and was noted for his extraordinary kindness.

Content

Monday, October 8:

A lot of orthopedics; R., however, not in the mood for work. He starts making a copy of Parsifal for the printers.

News about the school not at all good; Herr Hey is making very high demands! The leaflets go out into the world, but so far there has been no response; R. laughs and says, “If my school comes to nothing, what a slap in the face for me!”

In the evening he plays me a splendid theme for a symphony and says he has so many themes of this kind; they are always occurring to him, but he cannot use such merry things in Parsifal. He is unutterably kind and good toward me! All that I can think of in exchange: For you I would willingly die!
