Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 28, 1877

Overview

The day mixed gratitude from others, correspondence about musical societies, and difficult business matters with Schott. Richard also reflected on how little of Bayreuth seemed to have truly remained in memory, then the evening closed with continued and satisfying reading in Herodotus.

Content

Tuesday, August 28:

Several nice expressions of gratitude for the medallions, R. thanks me for my “thoughtful gift” — Herr Tappert asks for instructions for the W. Societies, R. will devise something for them. Herr T. sends the “sonata,” and R. says, “I am now living off my capital; at the time that was written I enjoyed a surplus, which worked to the advantage of the under-plus.”

Discussions with Herr Gross about the relationship with Schott, not a very pleasant one!! ... Should we let him have the Idyll?

A nice pamphlet by Herr Wolzogen about the Societies, also a reminiscence of Bayreuth by a Herr Oesterlein. R. says his memory of the performances is so clouded, as if nothing had really come out of them! Betz’s fine achievement in the second act of Die Walküre during the first costume rehearsal.

In the evening continued Herodotus with much enjoyment.
