Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 10, 1877

Overview

The day centers on an intimate exchange between the couple, as a dream seems to mirror unspoken sadness and private anxieties. In the evening they continue reading Lucian, while a meteor shower prompts a memory of past disappointment and a wry attempt to reinterpret what a falling star once seemed to mean.

Friday, August 10:

R. dreamed that I wanted to go away, that I was sitting in the carriage, and that the horse reared up against me. We discuss the curious connection between his dreams and my thoughts. When I am troubled by sad thoughts which I keep to myself, he sees me in danger during the night!

He works or reflects, and I also in my own way; in the evening we continue with Lucian.

Night of shooting stars. R. says he does not care for them since the falling star in Heidelberg deceived him so: “But why did I apply it to the King? Perhaps it meant the manufacturer in Viersen?”
