Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 26, 1869

Overview

Richard is distressed over how to answer the King's letter, unsure whether seriousness, indirection, or silence is best. Children's coughs overshadow the day, and the Don Quixote masquerade continues to disappoint them deeply. A letter from Doris Brockhaus offers the happier prospect of obtaining Uncle Adolph Wagner's picture.

Tuesday, October 26:

R.’s great distress in regard to the King’s letter; how to reply, earnestly or circuitously, or keep completely silent? The day overshadowed by children’s coughs.

In the evening great sorrow concerning D. Quixote. The masquerade is intolerable, and this makes us very sad. Much pleasure, on the other hand, caused by a letter from Doris Brockhaus, who tells me I shall probably be able to obtain the picture of Uncle Adolph Wagner.
